My Mud Smoothie

I think I’ve got something to make it just that little bit better…

If you have read my previous posts you may know that I’ve started living a more active lifestyle. But to achieve an all round healthy lifestyle it’s not only important to keep active but it’s also important to fuel your body with the nutrients that it requires. Seeing as fruit and veg provide some of the most nutrient rich food on the planet, I thought that would be a good place to start. I’ve been experimenting with smoothies for a few months now, I like to throw things together and see how they turn out. I hate to brag but this time I absolutely nailed it. If heaven had a taste then this would be it.

Theres just one slight problem… It looks like mud .

Before you go digging up your gardens I should probably state that you do not need actual mud to make this smoothie. You just need a blender and some fruit so put the shovels down!

You’re probably wondering how something that looks like mud can really taste that good so let’s get straight into it. Prepare to be amazed…

Ingredients:

  • Spinach – 1 cup packed
  • Apple – 1/2 cup cored and chopped
  • Pear – 1/2 cup cored and chopped
  • Kiwi – 1/4 cup chopped into chunks
  • Blueberries – 1/2 cup (TOP TIP: Using less blueberries will give you a nice green smoothie)
  • Green Grapes – 1/2 cup or around 8 singles
  • Water – Fill to the top of the fruit
  • Tropical Juice (optional)  – Fill to the top of the spinach
  • Vanilla Yoghurt (optional) – Around 4 teaspoons

I prepare and freeze all of the fruit that I use in my smoothies in advance so it’s a lot faster to make them and I don’t have to use ice if I want it chilled.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare ingredients and gather them in front of you with your blender
  2. Add spinach to your blender
  3. Add apple, pear, kiwi, grape and finally blueberries
  4. Add any optional extras
  5. Fill to the top of the fruit with water
  6. BLEND  (for lower powered blenders you may have to blend in stages and/or pulse)
  7. Pour it into your favourite glass and enjoy.

All ingredient measurements have been made purely for this post. I never weigh anything as I believe most of the fun comes from experimenting and I generally eye-ball everything. This means that I don’t get the exact same taste, consistency or colour every time, but that’s the way I like it. Keep it fun.

I am lucky (or unlucky) enough to find it impossible to gain weight, therefore I’m not calorie counting. With the measurements above, without the optional extras, the smoothie should be fairly low in calories. If weight loss IS what you are going for then replacing the tropical juice with more water will reduce the calories and make it an all round healthier smoothie. Also portion size is important to keep in mind. I generally go for bigger portion sizes however you could reduce the ingredient amounts and still have a healthy snack. Smoothies are a great way of fitting a variety of different fruits and vegetables into your diet, however they should be consumed as part of a balanced diet and shouldn’t completely replace eating whole, non blended foods.

I’m not about to tell you to force yourself to drink something that you do not like just because it’s suppose to be healthy. I like to promote happiness, as long as you’re not harming anyone else, do things for you and ultimately, do things that make you happy. However, you need to at least try it to see if you like it, right? And I think that following this recipe will provide a pretty good place to start. But this is just my personal favourite so use it as a place to start and then experiment!  This is the best part. Get creative, gather up all the fruits and veg that you like and get blending!
